Introducing the The Herbarium

As you may or may not know, I have taken both the Herbal Academy of New England’s beginning and intermediate herb courses, and, although I was already a practicing herbalist, took a lot of great information away. I love the way their site and educational products are laid out in such a clear and concise way. It is easily navigable and a great introduction to herbalism.

When they mentioned a new self guided educational platform they just released I was so glad to join up and look it over!

The Herbarium in The Herbal Academy of New England’s new program, Ill let them tell you about it in their own words first:

Inside these digital walls, weve transformed the traditional herbarium, a collection of dried plants used as reference, to share herbal experiences, discoveries, and lessons through beautiful visuals. You will find complete and constantly updated herbal monographs, photographs, thoughtful articles, and educational podcasts, videos, tutorials, and teaching charts. As part of The Herbarium community, you will have all of these resources right at your fingertips, enriching your life-long journey through herbalism.”

Now, this easy to use website is beautiful, contains some awesome resources and articles but let me tell you about my favorite: The Herbal Monographs!

Monograph Preview in The Herbarium

I have a bit of a pet peeve when it comes to online (and in print) herbal monographs. It is so easy to glance over the uses of an herb (ex: ginger is great for digestion!) that we loose the intricacies, the details, the personality and soul of the plant. We take this amazingly delightful herbal ally and strip it down to its most common uses which both disrespects the spirit of the herb AND puts us, as herbalists (weather practicing or home herb enthusiasts) at a great disadvantage.

The monographs on HANE’s site are beautiful, detailed, and exceptionally high quality. They contain not only the more and less common uses but flavors, energetics, actions, uses and preparations. These are some of the more detailed monographs available online written by some wonderful herbalists.

As an added bonus, they have forums where you can ask any herbal questions you might have and experienced and learning herbalists can help you find the solution you are seeking. They also offer discounts to members (hint, there is a Natural Herbal Living Magazine discount as a part of the membership!), and a lot of great freebies.

The greatest thing is it only costs $45 a year, which is about $3.50 a month! Even better, they are offering our readers a 10% off discount using the coupon code HERBALLIVING . This expires at the end of January 2015 so get it before its too late!
