Motherwort is a powerful herbal ally with much support for women, not only in their childbearing years, but also during their time of transition from mother to crone. It also has a strong affinity for the heart, thus its Latin name, Leonorus cardiaca. It is in the heart space that we often see its use in men. Interestingly enough, this plant doesn’t just work on the physical heart and physical manifestations of heart disease like hypertension, high cholesterol, and chronic arterial inflammation; it also works on a very emotional and spiritual level.
Motherwort is a friend to those who need comfort, love, and encouragement in life, who don’t have a mother-like figure to easily turn to. It offers gentle but firm support, and encourages nurturing movement within the body and soul, to help a person feel safe and whole. It often encourages us to move outside of our normal safety zones, and offers support around the anxiety that can occur when we shake our lives up.
I love motherwort for that fluttery anxious feeling I get before I need to perform in front of a large audience. Speaking in front of peers, acting on stage, singing a solo, these are some instances where fear of the unknown, fear of judgement, and anxiety can occur. This often causes me to have anxious stomach, including frequent loose stools. Motherwort, combined with wood betony, helps calm my anxiety, support healthy digestion, and encourage me to shine my light where it is needed most. It helps to push me, in a sweet and encouraging way, to do my best, just like Mom would.
